From Uncertainty to Application:
Coaching Female Clients in Practice

A four-week practical learning experience for fitness professionals, using The EFA Decision Framework and 12 realistic client scenarios to develop your skills in applying research and guidance to each client’s individual needs.

A client tells you she’s been feeling unusually tired, her recovery isn’t what it used to be, and is wondering whether her hormones could be affecting how she feels. Another client shares that she hasn’t had a period for three months when you ask how things have been going with training and whether she’s noticed any changes in her health. Someone else shares that she’s recently found out she’s pregnant and wants to understand how she can continue training safely.

Each situation calls for more than knowing what the research says. You need to understand what your client is experiencing, consider the information available and recognise what else you may need to know before deciding how best to support them.

Their health, symptoms, training history, lifestyle, experience and goals all help inform those decisions. Research and professional guidance inform your coaching, while your clients’ individual needs and circumstances help shape how you put that knowledge into practice.

What questions should you ask?
What might you be overlooking?
What is appropriate within your role, and when might additional support be needed?

This is where Applied Practice comes in.

Through realistic client scenarios and The EFA Decision Framework, you’ll develop a practical process for asking informed questions, interpreting research and guidance, navigating client conversations and deciding how best to support each individual.

You know the theory, but what does this mean for the individual women you coach?

The coaching challenge

Develop the skills to interpret women’s health research and guidance, understand what matters for each individual and make informed coaching decisions that reflect their needs and circumstances.

The five-part learning journey

What you’ll learn

PART 01

Hormonal systems and female physiology

Build a clearer understanding of the hormones and physiological systems relevant to female health, and how that knowledge helps you engage with the questions clients bring to you

PART 02

The menstrual cycle

Learn about the phases and physiological processes across the menstrual cycle, how these can vary between individuals and why your client’s own experience matters when discussing any changes they’ve noticed.

PART 03

Tracking and recognising patterns

Explore how clients may choose to record symptoms and other observations in a diary, what patterns over time can tell you and where more context may be needed.

PART 04

Making informed coaching decisions

Bring the physiology together with what a client has shared about their symptoms, recovery and wider circumstances to consider what support may be appropriate, including any changes to their training

PART 05

Communication and wider health considerations

Explore energy availability, the Female Athlete Triad and RED-S, and why they matter when supporting female clients. Develop the communication skills to discuss relevant concerns and recognise when further support or referral may be appropriate.
